Advanced Obstetrics Fellowship

San Joaquin General Hospital- Family Medicine Residency Program and the Department of OB/GYN invite highly motivated applicants to join our Advanced Obstetrics Fellowship. Our program features an intensive curriculum that prepares fellows to effectively address critical maternal health needs.  The training combines education and experience in maternity care, operative obstetrics including cesarean section, tubal ligation, and obstetric repairs as well as office-based gynecology procedures and ultrasound. Our faculty consist of FM/OB physicians, obstetrician/gynecologists, and perinatologists. The fellow will have the opportunity to work with diverse and high-risk obstetrical patients. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY:

Anticipated completion of Family Medicine residency from an accredited program, California medical license (or eligibility), obstetric experience in residency of at least 3 months with at least 40 vaginal deliveries and 10 cases as the first assist in cesarean sections.

The position has been filled for the 2023-2024 academic year.  Applications for the 2024-2025 year will open in April 2023, with final application acceptance date of July 31, 2023.  Only completed applications will be considered.  Applications are considered on a rolling basis.  Interviews will take place in September and October 2023.


COMPETENCY EXPECTATIONS AFTER ONE YEAR OF FELLOWSHIP

  • Primary and repeat Cesarean deliveries as primary surgeon

  • Other operative obstetrics, including

    • Perineal laceration repairs

    • Operative vaginal delivery

    • Insertion of Bakri balloon

    • O'Leary Stitch

    • B-Lynch suture

  • High risk pregnancy management, including preeclampsia, preterm labor, pregestational and gestational diabetes, etc

  • Vaginal deliveries, including VBAC

  • Colposcopy and LEEP procedures

  • Intra-operative and post-partum tubal ligation

  • Family planning procedures, including IUD and Nexplanon

 

SCHEDULE

  • Family medicine clinic (1 session per week)

  • Management of L&D floor (2-3 shifts per week)

  • Fellow prenatal clinic (1 session per week)

  • Outpatient OB/gynecology clinic (1 session per week)

  • Outpatient women's health/gynecology procedure clinic (1 session per week)

  • Outpatient management of high risk pregnancies with UC Davis perinatologist (3 sessions per month)

  • Academic assignments

  • Operative gynecology block (1 session per week for 3 months)

    • TAH

    • D & C

    • Vaginal repair
